The Ocean View Guesthouse is just a 30-minute drive from some of South Africa’s most famous vineyards. Especially well known is the area around Stellenbosch, Franschoek and Paarl. The scenic route is definitely worth a trip! The history of South African wines and it’s wineries dates back to the 17th century. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate and due to the winter rainfalls some of the finest quality wines of the country are produced in this region.
Stellenbosch is the second oldest city countrywide and considered to be a university town. Located in the middle of numerous wine-growing estates it tempts with historical buildings, delicious wines, unique restaurants and charming little shops.
Not far from Stellenbosch you will find Franschoek, which was founded by the Huguenots in 1688. Up to now there is still a French atmosphere in town – and the food and the restaurants are considered to be South Africa’s culinary capital.
Paarl is almost as old as Franschoek. On your way getting there you drive along the KWV wine area – with a size of 22 ha the biggest in the world.
Finally there is Constantia – well known and extremely popular, only another half-an-hour drive in southerly direction.
Most of the estates offer wine tastings, and in some – like in Boschendal, Buitenverwachting, Vergelegen and Spier – you are welcome to order a picnic basket and enjoy its contents while sitting in the most beautiful gardens under big, old trees. And if you are interested in learning some more about South African wines, you should attend to one of the various wine seminars.
Obviously you can take your own vehicle for these trips. But it is definitely worth joining one of the very well organized tours. We do even offer our guests helicopter flights to the estates including romantic lunches on the respective premises.
