Why Winter is the Most Underrated Time to Visit Cape Town
When thinking about winter in the Mother City, picture a completely different atmosphere. Clear, silvery light drapes over the Twelve Apostles Mountain Range. A salty breeze blows directly off the Atlantic Ocean, beneath moody skies with occasional bars of sunshine breaking through the clouds. There is an overwhelming sense of cosiness as the “Cape of Storms” weathers her intermittent cold fronts.
With fewer crowds, lower prices, and an abundance of indoor delights, winter in Cape Town is an experience many overlook. In our opinion, you absolutely shouldn’t skip it! At Ocean View House in Camps Bay, winter is not a season to endure. Instead, it is a special time to savour.
Whether you’re here for slow mornings with a sea view or spontaneous day trips, here’s our guide to winter’s warmest offerings.
Scenic Escapes & Whale Watching
Land and Sea Whale Watching in Hermanus
Just a 90-minute drive from Ocean View House lies the picturesque fishing town of Hermanus. In winter, this coastal destination becomes a stage for one of nature’s greatest spectacles. Humpback and Southern Right whales arrive at our shores to breed.
Peak viewing falls between June and November when these giant mammals gather close to the coast. You can opt for a boat-based whale-watching tour. Alternatively, you can keep it land-based along the famous Cliff Path. Either way, bring your binoculars and your sense of wonder. It really makes for a fabulous day out.
Exploring Cape Point and Snow-Dusted Peaks
Crisp air, fewer tourists, and dramatic coastal views make Cape Point Nature Reserve a fantastic winter outing as well. Wrap up warmly and head to this iconic reserve where rugged cliffs meet rolling seas. The famous lighthouse trail offers unmatched photo opportunities. On the way, keep an eye out for local wildlife like baboons, ostriches, zebras, and antelope.
If you’re lucky, the surrounding mountains may even dust themselves in snow during your visit. This happens most frequently around the towns of Ceres or Matroosberg. Simply ask us about day trip options if the weather forecast hints at snow.
Indoor Markets & Cosy Eateries
Discovering Cape Town’s Indoor Food Markets
Cape Town’s food scene doesn’t slow down in winter. It simply shifts indoors, providing plenty of spots to experience the city’s flavourful food scene.
Spend a Saturday morning at the Oranjezicht Market at the V&A Waterfront (just 10km from Ocean View House) for artisanal produce, hot coffee, and brunch bites under cover. Alternatively, try Neighbourgoods Market in Woodstock, where industrial-chic meets gourmet global street food. The Time Out Market offers curated tastings from some of Cape Town’s most renowned chefs, all under one roof – ideal for grazing through a rainy afternoon.
Closer to home, the Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay buzzes with live music, wood-fired pizza, and local charm. Return to Ocean View House with a full belly and a handful of edible souvenirs.
Looking for something with a creative twist? Skip the crowds and experience Camps Bay at its most relaxed. Spend a quiet afternoon at The Pottery, where you can create your own ceramic keepsake (and enjoy a flat white while you’re at it). Warm pastries from nearby cafés are the perfect pairing to a slow stroll along the beachfront or a nap back at your suite with the sound of the Atlantic Ocean below.
And, while we’re at it: Don’t miss out on a visit to Honest Chocolate Café, with their viral hot chocolate tasting, warm cookies and artisanal slabs make for the perfect for winter indulgence.
Winter Warmers: Art, Wine & Culture
Experiencing First Thursdays and Museums
Cape Town’s First Thursdays are a vibrant celebration of art, culture, and city life. On the first Thursday of every month, the streets around Loop, Long, and Bree Street buzz with energy. Galleries, studios, design shops, and concept stores stay open late and invite the public inside.
What began as a small art walk has evolved into a dynamic evening of exhibitions, live music, DJs, and food. It successfully draws both locals and visitors into the city’s creative heart.
There’s no set route or cost, just an open invitation to explore. This makes for the perfect chance to visit places like Zeitz MOCAA by day, then experience the city’s vibrant cultural scene by night.
Firelit Tasting Rooms and the Waterfront
There can be no talking about art without mentioning wine and it just so happens that winter and wine go hand-in-hand. The nearby Constantia Wine Route is the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere and offers cosy, firelit tasting rooms and long, flavourful lunches. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are also within easy reach for a full day of cellar-door experiences. Ask our team at Ocean View House to arrange a driver or curated wine tour.
The V&A Waterfront also deserves a mention here, home to the Two Oceans Aquarium, interactive museums, contemporary galleries, and regular live performances. Whether you’re browsing high-end boutiques or exploring local craft markets, it’s a fun way to stay
