Sustainable and responsible tourism in Cape Town
In the last few years, sustainable and responsible tourism has become more important than ever, facing numerous challenges and adapting to new norms and expectations. As a result, sustainable and responsible tourism has gained significant importance, becoming a top priority for both travellers and businesses.
One reason for this shift is the increased awareness of environmental issues. Global lockdowns highlighted the fragility of our planet and systems and the need for more sustainable practices. With decreased human activity during lockdowns, many people observed the positive environmental impact, such as reduced pollution and improved wildlife conditions. This has led to a greater appreciation for our natural surroundings. Nestled in the heart of Camps Bay, with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Twelve Apostles mountain range, Ocean View House is primely situated to offer luxurious accommodation whilst focussing on minimising our environmental footprint and supporting the local community.
We understand that preserving our beautiful surroundings is essential for the well-being of future generations and for the experience of current guests. There are many ways to achieve this, some of which are already in play, and others are on our list to implement.
Water conservation and waste reduction are two practices that Ocean View House has in place to help us play our role in sustainable and responsible tourism. We have installed water-saving devices throughout the property, and our indigenous gardens are designed to be water-wise, requiring minimal irrigation. Our recycling program ensures that waste materials are responsibly managed and repurposed whenever possible. We also provide reusable water bottles for guests to minimise single-use plastic waste.
Another factor is the importance of supporting local economies. The challenge of the forced global slowdown due to lockdowns had a devastating impact on local communities, particularly those heavily reliant on tourism. As a result, there has been a growing emphasis on supporting local businesses, artisans, and communities to help our industry recover and thrive. We’ve seen that our guests are increasingly seeking authentic, locally-sourced experiences that contribute to the well-being of their destination’s residents.
In recent months we’ve also seen a significant increase in the awareness of mental health and well-being, both for individuals and the wider community. As a result, many are now more conscious of the need to maintain physical and mental health during their trips. This has increased demand for wellness-focused travel experiences, outdoor activities, and healthy, locally-sourced food. All of these are included in our approach to providing an unforgettable experience.
At Ocean View House, we believe that luxury and sustainability can go hand-in-hand. By embracing eco-friendly practices and supporting the local community, we strive to provide an unforgettable experience for our guests while ensuring the preservation of Cape Town’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. After enjoying a magnificent summer season, the first since lockdowns, it’s encouraging to know that we have emerged stronger and more resilient.
Join us on this journey towards a more sustainable and responsible future, and let Ocean View House be your home away from home as you explore the wonders of Camps Bay and beyond!
